A conversation with Daniel Eliot

Today’s episode is a very special one as we get to connect with our good friend, Daniel Eliot, Director of Education & Strategic Initiatives at National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) where he is responsible for building and maintaining NCSA’s newest initiative, CyberSecure My Business. During our quick chat, Marco and Sean cover two things with Daniel:

  1. We discuss our recent partnership announcement (learn more)

  2. We look at what’s to come during National Small Business Week (learn more)

ITSPmagazine chooses our partnerships very carefully. Our primary mission is to raise awareness for cybersecurity by making it understandable, accessible and part of everyone’s life. But we believe that our voice alone is never going to be loud enough. No matter what we can do as individual organizations, our influence is never going to be as strong and powerful as that of a community of organizations coming together, united by the same passion, goal and vision.

NCSA is the nation's leading nonprofit, public-private partnership promoting cybersecurity and privacy education and awareness. NCSA works with a broad array of stakeholders in government, industry and civil society.

NCSA's core efforts include National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (October); Data Privacy Day (Jan. 28); STOP. THINK. CONNECT.™, the global online safety awareness and education campaign co-founded by NCSA and the Anti-Phishing Working Group with federal government leadership from DHS; and CyberSecure My Business™, which offers webinars, web resources and workshops to help businesses be resistant to and resilient from cyberattacks.

Teaming up with NCSA the help amplify all of the small- and medium-sized business activities driven by their CyberSecure My Business program just makes sense and we’re super excited about all that we can and will do together!

Daniel Eliot joined the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) in 2018 as director of small business programs. Daniel runs the CyberSecure My Business™ program, which is a comprehensive national program led by NCSA to help businesses of all sizes learn to be safer and more secure online.

Prior to his tenure at NCSA, he worked both within and in an advisory capacity to small businesses. Most recently, Daniel worked at the Delaware Small Business Development Center (SBDC) as the manager of technology business development. While there, he developed specialty programs to help small business start and scale. One such program was DatAssured, Delaware’s small business cybersecurity program based off the National Institute of Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework. This was a state-wide program designed to help Delaware’s small businesses identify threats; develop cybersecurity readiness plans and processes to protect their data; detect breaches; locate partners, vendors and resources; and respond to and recover from successful cyberattacks. Because of his efforts, the Delaware SBDC became one of the national leaders in small business cybersecurity education and outreach. Daniel received a letter of commendation from Governor John Carney’s Cyber Security Advisory Council for his efforts addressing cybersecurity awareness and education across Delaware.

Daniel also created and managed SBIResource, a program designed to help innovation-based companies apply to, and win, Small Business Innovation Research funding from 11 federal agencies. Daniel helped small start-ups access over $4.8 million in non-dilutive capital through this program.

Daniel holds a B.S. in education and a M.S. in adult education from Indiana University, Bloomington.
